Northern Notes: Two ways to help others

By Stephanie Beach, Local columnist

---- — For the fifth year in a row the family of Calvin Pierce, "Cal's Rollin' Crew," will walk in his memory at the ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) Walk Sept. 30 at Kensington Park in Milford. Calvin passed away May 14, 2012, at his home in Beulah.

"In the past four years our family has raised over $8,000 for research and respite care," wrote Jennifer (Pierce) Hawley of Beulah. "We are asking family, friends and businesses ... for their continued support. Our goal this year is to raise $2,500.

Again we walk in memory of Calvin Pierce and also for two of our ALS pals from Bear Lake who we have lost this year, and all ALS patients in Michigan. We will continue to walk in hopes that a cure will be found."

Jennifer went on to thank all the family, friends and businesses for their continued support.

Anyone who would like to help the family in their fund-raising efforts can send a check, payable to ALS of MI, to Jennifer Hawley or Shirley Pierce, 7024 Lincoln Road, Beulah, MI 49617-9712.

The Maples Guild of Benzonia would like to invite the community to its annual "non-event" to support The Maples. Its "no picnic picnic" is back with a new name, "Stay At Home Picnic."

"As summer ends, we all have full schedules and can't fit in one more activity," Lou Laske wrote on behalf of the Maples Guild. "This gives you the opportunity to stay home, count your blessings and help with the 'extras' for the residents (at the Maples)."

The guild urges supporters to celebrate with a picnic at home with family and friends and then consider a donation to the Maples Guild Donation Fund to provide those extras that enhance life for the residents at The Maples.

Some of the extras include money for the beauty shop, bunco, bingo and field trips; a DVD player for the activity room; a wireless microphone; extra games for the Wii; and new TVs for resident rooms.

"We are grateful for the response last year and hope you will consider making a donation, no matter how small," Lou wrote.

Donations, payable to the Maples Guild, may be sent to The Maples Guild, c/o Judy Scheich, 8678 Coat Road, Benzonia, MI 49616.
