Church Women United is asking for donations of children's exchange Valentine cards and Valentine cookies.
The Valentine cards, minus envelopes, will go to residents at area nursing homes to brighten their Valentine's Day, while the cookies will be distributed to jail inmates.
Donations may be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday at First Christian Church on South Airport Road W. The deadline for making donations is Sunday, Feb. 3. To learn more, call 938-1387.
It's not easy to get "likes" on a Facebook page and with social media sites cluttered with advertising and excessive postings it's hard to know if your "like" actually matters. Rather than beg their followers to share their page, Great Lakes Pet Memorial in Traverse City wanted to make its "Like Campaign" mean something, so for every "like" it received during the one-month campaign, the business donated $1 to local animal rescue group AC PAW. The campaign raised $433 for the organization.
"Nothing is more important to me than helping homeless animals in my local community," said Kerri Collier, owner of Great Lakes Pet Memorial. "I thought it would be a great way to give back and gain likes at the same time. AC PAW was gracious enough to support the idea."
"We are so thankful for the kindness offered by Kerri and Great Lakes Pet Memorial," said Erin Monigold, AC PAW social media volunteer. "With the help of 433 fans in the Facebook community and the resulting generous donations from Great Lakes Pet Memorial, we will be able to save three animals."
AC PAW will use the donations to help with spaying/neutering and vaccinations to help three homeless animals have a second chance at life.
Kerri said the business will be promoting another donation drive for pet rescues this spring. The Facebook page is at www.facebook.com/GLPetMemorial.
The Manna Food Project recently received a $3,000 donation from Odawa Casino, owned and operated by the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians. The funds were raised through a "Diced Competition," which paired local celebrities with local chefs in a cooking competition.
Kathy Hart, executive director of The Manna Food Project, commented that the money will help provide up to 37,500 meals to area families.
"An event like the 'Diced Competition' shows how bringing a group together for a common cause and having fun along the way can make a difference. Everyone doing a little can change the world! Thank you again for your generosity, creativity and sharing," Kathy said.
