SUTTONS BAY -- Dwaun Anderson had an interested observer at a workout Monday night.
Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo was in Suttons Bay to watch the 6-foot-4 junior.
Izzo is taking a serious look at Anderson, who averaged 20 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4 assists last season.
"He liked what he saw," Suttons Bay coach Todd Hursey said. "The word he used was intriguing."
Anderson went through a series of drills that focused on his shooting and ballhandling.
"It went pretty good," Anderson said. "He told me he was impressed and that he would like to see me work out some more."
Anderson took an unofficial visit to Michigan State last weekend. He attended the football game, toured the facilities and met the players.
"I liked it. It was nice," the soft-spoken Anderson said.
Anderson has scholarship offers from Central Michigan and Utah on the table. Several other schools are showing interest. A University of Dayton coach watched Anderson during an open gym on Sunday.
"September is the month when (college) coaching staffs are on the road trying to see guys play," Hursey said. "My phone's been ringing off the hook. Coaches are trying to find time to come up and watch him play -- Michigan, Michigan State, Dayton, Oakland, Detroit. Eastern Michigan just called (Monday). Butler called today."
Hursey, who accompanied Anderson on his trip to East Lansing, was impressed that Izzo made the trip north.
"That was a real shot in the arm for Dwaun," he said. "All the other schools that have contacted me, it's their assistant coaches who are planning a trip up.
"When the head coach comes into your gym that makes a statement."
Hursey said he knew last week a member of the Michigan State staff was coming, but he learned Saturday it would be Izzo.
Hursey said Izzo seemed impressed with Anderson's athletic ability and explosiveness.
"He said, 'We'll definitely be back to see him again,'" Hursey said.
Anderson has an unofficial visit to Michigan scheduled in October.
The 16-year-old turned heads during the spring with his play on the AAU circuit, especially when he went head-to-head with Mount Pleasant's Trey Ziegler, one of the state's top seniors.
College coaches took notice and soon after recruiting interest intensified.
"That's when the calls and letters started coming," Anderson said.
In July, Anderson went out east to play for a New Jersey-based AAU team.
"It was an opportunity to play with some great players and against some great players," Hursey said. "That's what Dwaun needed."
