College Notes: TC teammates reunite

TRAVERSE CITY -- It was a reunion for former TC Central teammates at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate and UMB Bank Mizzou Tiger Intercollegiate golf tournaments.

University of Michigan junior Bill Rankin tied for 13th at the Kepler, which concluded on Sunday, with rounds of 77, 77 and 72. Michigan State junior Randy Hutchison tied for 19th with a 228 after rounds of 78, 75 and 75.

In the team standings, Michigan State was second, just three shots behind Colorado. The Wolverines were ninth.

Hutchison and Rankin were paired together for the first 36 holes of the Missouri Intercollegiate, which concluded on Tuesday. Hutchison was second overall with a 215 (72-71-72) to lead the Spartans to a fifth-place finish while Rankin tied for 15th with a 224 (74-75-75). U-M was seventh as a team.

-- Notre Dame's run to the NCAA Division I hockey finals ended with a 4-1 loss to Boston College in Saturday night's title game.

The Irish (27-16-4) reached their first final with a 5-4 overtime victory over top-ranked Michigan in Thursday's final.

Junior center Justin White (TC West) had one of the two assists on Calle Ridderwall's game-winning tally. White also had an assist on the first goal of the game for the Irish, also by Ridderwall.

White had 10 assists and 14 points while playing in 43 games for the Irish this season.

-- It didn't take Hope College senior Lindsay Lange (Manistee) long to get back on track. After a successful season in basketball, Lange had a hand in three victories at Saturday's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association track and field jamboree on Saturday.

Lange won the shot put (37'6"), 200 (26.58) and was on the winning 400 relay (49.23). She was also second in the 100 hurdles (15.12) and 1600 relay (4:15.1) and fourth in the long jump (15'2").

Alma junior Katherine Porter (Cheboygan) was third in the long jump (15'31/2") and 400 relay (51.67), fourth in the pole vault (8'51/4") and fifth in the triple jump (31'13/4").

Hope freshman Jolene Jeske (Benzie Central) was fifth in the 3,000 steeplechase (12:48.45) and seventh in the 400 hurdles (1:14.15).

In the men's meet, Hope sophomore Hunter Nostrant (TC St. Francis) was third in the pole vault (12'113/4") while Calvin sophomore Ben VanWyk (Elk Rapids) was fifth (15:38.84) and Alma sophomore Wade Peacock (Benzie Central) seventh (15:56.69) in the 5,000.

Alma sophomore Dane Curth (Mackinaw City) was sixth in the 1,600 relay (3:36.25) while Hope sophomore Preston Pierson (TC Central) was seventh in the 400 (52.46).

-- Michigan State hosted its lone home outdoor meet of the season, braving the elements to hold the Spartan Invitational on Saturday.

MSU sophomore Spencer Beatty (Harbor Springs) found the home course to his liking, winning the 3,000 steeplechase (9:29.63).

Also winning an event was Grand Valley State sophomore Maegan Doyen (Manistee), who tied for first in the high jump (1.63 meters).

Competing unattached, MSU freshman Aaron Simoneau (Manistee) was fifth in the 1,500 (4:00.79) and sixth in the 800 (1:57.21). Also competing without a school affiliation, Grand Valley State freshman Kyle Eno (Cheboygan) was sixth in the shot put (14.3 meters). Aquinas senior Kyle Kramer (Charlevoix) was fifth in the hammer throw (52.17 meters) while Grand Valley State freshman Weston Buchan (Glen Lake) was eighth in the javelin (46.39 meters).

-- Freshman pitcher Jennie Elliott (Frankfort) had a big performance for the Lake Superior State softball team in its 4-3 and 9-4 losses to Mercyhurst on Sunday.

Elliott was 2 for 3 with a RBI double and run-scoring single in the 4-3 setback. She was also the losing pitcher, evening her record at 4-4. In the nightcap, Elliott blasted a three-run homer, her team-best fifth of the season.

Elliott is hitting .288 with 10 RBIs for the Lakers (6-24, 2-10 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference).

-- Sophomore Andy Pascoe (TC Central) had another big week at the plate for the Evansville baseball team, going 11 for 20 with eight RBIs.

In a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series against Missouri State, Pascoe was 2 for 4 with an RBI in Sunday's 12-5 loss, 2 for 4 in Saturday's 4-1 loss and had a RBI groundout in Friday's 10-4 loss.

In a 6-5 non-league win over Murray State on Wednesday, Pascoe was 3 for 4 with a two-run homer, his third of the season. Pascoe was 4 for 4 with four RBIs and was on base all six times in a 15-10 win over Tennessee-Martin on Tuesday.

Pascoe leads the Aces (6-27, 1-11 MVC) with a .336 average. He also tops the team in home runs and RBIs (26).

-- Ferris State freshman defenseman Zach Redmond (TC Central) was named the hockey team's Rookie of the Year. He led all defensemen in scoring with 19 points (six goals, 13 assists) in 37 games.

Redmond, who received all-rookie team honorable mention in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, was second on the team in plus-minus with a +14.

-- University of Detriot's Patrick Liederbach (Petoskey) broke his own freshmen record in the 1,500. Liederbach ran a 3:56.17 in taking ninth place at the Bison Outdoor Classic in Lewisburg, Pa.

-- Northwood junior second baseman Brett Rohn (Cadillac) had a two-run double in the first inning on Sunday to help lead the Timberwolves to a 16-2 victory in the second game of a GLIAC doubleheader.

Rohn had a RBI single and scored three runs as Northwood beat Siena Heights 10-3 in a non-league game on Thursday.

-- Bowling Green senior Lindsay Jonkhoff (TC Central) shot an 84 in Monday's second round the Cardinal Classic golf tournament at Ball State. Jonkhoff tied for 52nd overall with a two-day total of 173.

-- Saginaw Valley State sophomore Emily Nugent (Benzie Central) placed in three events at Saturday's home track meet. Nugent was second in the hammer throw (144'4"), third in the discus (113'7") and fifth in the shot put (37'101/2").

Also for the host Cardinals, sophomore Jesse Evans (Cheboygan) was third in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:47.85) and freshman Brian Bott (Kingsley) sixth in the shot put (42'113/4") and discus (122'3").

Northwood junior Syrenna Rexroat (Lake Leelanau St. Mary's) was second in the 3,000 steeplechase (13:05.51) at the SVSU meet.

-- Olivet junior Scott Purdy (TC West) was 1 for 4 with a RBI groundout and scored a run as the Comets (9-9, 7-2 MIAA) routed Alma College 10-4 on Thursday. Purdy had an RBI double and scored twice in a 13-7 non-league victory over Rochester on Tuesday.

-- Alma College junior Emily Noss (TC Central) accounted for the Scots' only point in an 8-1 loss to Kalamazoo College on Thursday. Noss won 7-5, 6-0 at No. 6 singles for Alma (11-6, 3-3 MIAA).

-- Saginaw Valley State junior Kasey Hocquard (Cheboygan) was seventh overall at the two-day, 36-hole Findlay Invitational, which concluded on Saturday. Hocquard closed with a 72 after opening with a 78 for a two-round score of 6-over 150.

-- Senior pitcher Kit Tholen (TC Central) started and worked the first five innings of Wesleyan College's 9-7 loss to Hamilton on Sunday.

Tholen, who got a no-decision for Wesleyan (11-13, 4-4 New England Small College Athletic Conference) is 1-3 with a 5.31 ERA this season for the Cardinals.

-- University of Michigan sophomore Sarah Conkle (Bellaire) placed 13th in the pole vault (11'73/4") at the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz.

-- Lake Superior State junior Luke Allen (Onekama) was presented with the Chris Yanni Memorial Award named in honor of a former LSSU standout killed in a cycling accident in 1992. A three-time GLIAC all-academic selection, Allen runs cross country and track for the Lakers.
