TRAVERSE CITY -- One hit, that's it.
That's all that prevented Northwood junior shortstop Brett Rohn from turning in a .500 week at the plate.
The Cadillac product went 9 for 20 for the Timberwolves, who dropped a four-game Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball series against Findlay, which came on the heels of a non-league sweep of Rochester on Wednesday.
Rohn was 5 for 6 and scored a run in Sunday's 9-4 and 6-4 losses. Rohn was 1 for 3 in each of Saturday's games, including a two-run triple in the first game.
Against Rochester, Northwood won 20-1 and 15-5 as Rohn had a hit in each game. He drove in three and scored two in game one and had a RBI and scored twice in the nightcap.
Rohn is hitting .333 with 18 RBIs and 17 runs for Northwood (12-10, 2-7 GLIAC).
-- Another meet, another freshman record for University of Detroit's Patrick Liederbach (Petoskey).
A week after breaking the school freshman record in the 5,000 meters, Liederbach established a new standard by finishing sixth in the 1,500 (3:58.72) at Saturday's Oliver Nikoloff Invitational in Cincinnati. Liederbach was also 14th in the 800 (1:57.55) for the Titans.
-- Olivet College went 5-1 last week and junior Scott Purdy (TC West) had hits in five of the games.
The Comets split a pair of 8-7 games against Kalamazoo on Saturday as Purdy was 2 for 4 with a two-run double and RBI single in the win and 1 for 4 with a RBI in the loss.
Purdy was 5 for 9 in a sweep of Tri-State on Thursday, going 4 for 5 with a pair of run-scoring singles in a 9-1 win. In a sweep of Tri-State on March 31, Purdy was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, including his second home run.
Purdy is hitting .322 and has driven in 16 for Olivet (7-9, 6-2 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association).
-- Sophomore catcher Andy Pascoe (TC Central) drove in two of Evansville's three runs in a three-game weekend sweep by Illinois State.
Pascoe was 3 for 4 with a RBI single in Sunday's 6-2 loss by Evansville (4-24, 1-8 Missouri Valley Conference). Pascoe was 2 for 4 with a solo home run -- his second of the season -- as the Purple Aces lost 11-1 in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Evansville was coming off non-league wins over Southeast Missouri State (8-7) on Wednesday and Brescia (6-1) on Tuesday. Pascoe was 3 for 4 with two RBIs against Southeast Missouri and had a hit and drove in a run against Brescia.
Pascoe, who's started all 28 games, is hitting .296 for Evansville. He leads the Aces in hits (32), doubles (seven), home runs, RBIs (18) and total bases (45).
-- Freshman Jennie Elliott (Frankfort) hit a home run in each game as the Lake Superior State softball team lost a pair of GLIAC games to Wayne State on Sunday, 3-1 and 9-3.
Elliott, who is hitting .268 this season, had a two-run homer in the nightcap. The homers were the third and fourth of the season for Elliott, who is also 4-3 as a pitcher.
In a 4-3 victory over Hillsdale on Saturday, Elliott was 1 for 1 and scored a run at the plate and was the winning pitcher in relief for the Lakers (6-20, 2-6 GLIAC).
-- Michigan State sophomore Spencer Beatty (Harbor Springs) ran the first leg of the Spartans' 4x1,500 relay team that placed fourth (15:55.74) at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va.
Beatty was also 11th in the 5,000 (14:55.49) for MSU, which took second to host William and Mary.
-- Senior Lindsay Jonkhoff (TC Central) improved every round, finishing 48th at the Illini Spring Classic golf tournament on Saturday. Jonkhoff opened with a round of 88 before shooting 81 and 79 on the final day for a three-round total of 248.
-- Alma College's women's tennis team improved to 10-4 overall and 2-1 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with a 7-2 win over Olivet on Thursday. Junior Emily Noss (TC Central) won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 doubles and 8-3 at No. 3 doubles for the Scots.
-- BYU junior Stephan Shay (Central Lake) just missed out on a NCAA regional qualifying time in the 5,000. Shay was sixth in his heat at the Stanford Invitational with a time of 14:13.29, just a second off the regional mark.
-- The Alma College men's tennis team took second at the Grand Rapids Community College quad on Saturday. Freshman Kace Lovejoy (TC West) won the title at No. 5 singles for the Scots.
-- Hillsdale College freshman Blake Knoblock (TC Central) placed ninth in the javelin (145'9") at Saturday's Mike Poehlein Invitational, hosted by Purdue.
-- Several former area athletes competed in the Bulldog Invitational hosted by Ferris State on Saturday. Leading the way were a couple of former Manistee athletes as Hope senior Lindsay Lange was third in the 100 hurdles (15.29) while Grand Valley State sophomore Maegan Doyen tied for third in the high jump (5'4").
Saginaw Valley State sophomore Emily Nugent (Benzie Central) was fourth in the hammer throw (148'6").
Aquinas senior Kyle Kramer (Charlevoix) had the lone finish among the top six on the men's side, taking sixth in the hammer (169'2").
-- Freshman pitcher Matt Stewart (TC West) picked up his second consecutive win in as many starts on Thursday as Mott Community College topped Henry Ford CC 7-2. Stewart scattered eight hits and struck out three while allowing both runs in five-plus innings.
Mott rolled to a 17-0 win in the nightcap. Sophomore Bryan Beaman (Kingsley) pitched one inning of relief for the Bears, striking out two and allowing just one hit.
Mott is 6-7 overall and 2-2 in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association.
-- Central Michigan freshman Robbie Harman (TC Central) got his first collegiate baseball start in the Chippewas' 16-8 non-conference win over Hillsdale on Tuesday. Harman started in center field before finishing the game at shortstop.
Harman went hitless in three at-bats, but did score a run for Central (11-16, 3-5 Mid-American Conference).
-- Rhodes College senior Nick Lewis (Gaylord) placed second in the 5,000 (15:44.93) at Saturday's Ohio Wesleyan's Marv Frye Invitational.
-- Sophomore outfielder Raenn Lupo (Kalkaska) went 3 for 5 with a RBI and a run scored as the Grand Rapids Community College softball team swept Glen Oaks on Wednesday, 6-3 and 6-2.
-- Central Michigan kicked of its outdoor track and field season by hosting Eastern Michigan in the CMU Open on Saturday.
Senior Andrew Manning (TC Central) was sixth in the 1,500 (4:24.56) for the Chippewas. Competing without an affiliation, CMU freshman Ryan McCullough (Cadillac) was fourth in the discus (143'6") and fifth in the javelin (140'11").
Freshman Nick Deering (TC West) was eighth in the 3,000 (9:48.23) for Eastern.
-- Sophomore linebacker Eric Gordon (TC West) helped lead the Michigan State defense to a 58-42 victory over the offense in an intrasquad scrimmage on Tuesday.
Gordon had five tackles -- one for a 3-yard loss -- and forced a fumble in the 14-possession, modified-scoring scrimmage.
-- Saginaw Valley State junior Kasey Hocquard (Cheboygan) tied for 61st with a two-round total of 152 at the NCAA spring regional, hosted by Northern Kentucky. Hocquard shot a 73 in Saturday's opening round.
