College Notes: Hutchison on Golfweek cover

TRAVERSE CITY -- It wasn't exactly the cover of Rolling Stone, but for a collegiate golfer it might have felt that way.

Along with his teammates, Michigan State University junior Randy Hutchison, a TC Central grad, was on the cover of Golfweek magazine in an article on first-year Spartans' coach Sam Puryear.

Then the TC Central grad tied for 21st at the Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif. Hutchison opened with rounds of 72 and 73 on Wednesday before carding a 79 on Thursday for a three-round total of 14-over-par 224.

-- It's on to the Frozen Four for the Notre Dame hockey team and junior center Justin White (TC West).

The Irish (26-15-4) became the first fourth seed to advance to the Division I semifinals. It's also Notre Dame's first-ever appearance in the Frozen Four.

Notre Dame won the West Regional title on Saturday night with a 3-1 victory over Michigan State. White had one of the two assists -- his eighth of the season -- in the win over Michigan State.

The Irish will face No. 1 ranked Michigan at 9 p.m. on April 10 in the Frozen Four in Denver.

-- While not competing as a member of her school, Notre Dame freshman Marissa Treece (Glen Lake) competed in the women's junior race at the 36th IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh, Scotland on Sunday.

Treece was 44th with a time of 21:55,. 1:56 behind winner Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia.

Treece was part of a six-person team from the United States, which was sixth overall. Ethiopia won the women's team event by placing four runners in the top seven and six in the top 11.

-- Olivet College won three of four games from Tri-State over the weekend to open Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball play.

Junior Scott Purdy (TC West) capped it by going 3 for 4 with three RBIs -- including his second home run of the season -- in Sunday's 4-1 win.

Purdy was 2 for 7 with a RBI in Saturday's split by the Comets (4-8).

-- Alma College increased its men's tennis dual record to 9-3 with a pair of 9-0 victories over Bluffton and Defiance on Saturday.

Alma also won the Thunder Doubles competition on Sunday.

Against Defiance, sophomore Tom Hardin (TC Central) won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and 8-1 at No. 2 doubles while freshman Kace Lovejoy (TC West) prevailed 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles and 8-5 at No. 1 doubles.

Playing at the same flights against Bluffton, Lovejoy won 6-4, 6-1 in singles and 8-5 in doubles while Hardin won 8-1 in doubles and 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 in singles.

Lovejoy added a 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 triumph at No. 5 singles in a 5-4 loss to Lake Superior State on Thursday.

-- Senior catcher Joe Lazar (TC Central) started all three games of Valparaiso's three-game weekend series against Cleveland State.

Lazar was 2 for 4 with a RBI fielder's choice and a run scored in the Crusaders' 7-0 win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Lazar was 2 for 4 in Sunday's finale, a 7-5 loss by Valpo (6-18, 2-3 Horizon League).

-- Hope College senior Lindsay Lange (Manistee) won the 100 hurdles (15.14) and was second in the 200 (27.16) and 400 relay (49.71) at Saturday's Grand Rapids Open.

Winning on the men's side was Aquinas freshman Scott Plude (Charlevoix), who took the 400 hurdles in 59.45.

Hope junior Sarah Kibbey (Glen Lake) was fifth in the triple jump (32'41/2") at the meet.

Also on the women's side, Cornerstone freshman Jasmine Pomeroy (Inland Lakes) was sixth in the 100 (13.53) and 200 (27.81). Grand Valley State freshman Kelly Tousley (Frankfort) was sixth in the 400 (1:05) and Calvin College freshman Amanda Leese (Central Lake) seventh in the long jump (16'1").

Hope sophomore Hunter Nostrant (TC St. Francis) was second in the pole vault (12'6") while Aquinas junior Matt Hewson (Petoskey) was second in the 400 relay (42.72) and fifth in the 100 (11.42).

Other area men placing were Hope sophomore Preston Pierson (TC Central), fourth in the 1600 relay (3:28.04); Grand Valley State freshman Kyle Eno (Cheboygan), sixth in the shot put (45'21/2"); Calvin sophomore Ben VanWyk (Elk Rapids), seventh in the 5,000 (15:58.92); Aquinas senior Kyle Kramer (Charlevoix), seventh in the javelin (129'10").

-- Mott Community College freshman pitcher Matt Stewart (TC West) picked up his first collegiate win in his first collegiate start in Wednesday's 9-0 win over Rochester College.

Stewart scattered two hits over four scoreless innings for Mott. He struck out five and walked one.

-- The Alma College women's tennis team bounced back from its first MIAA loss to beat Tri-State 6-3 on Saturday.

Junior Emily Noss (TC Central) had a pair of wins for the Scots (10-4, 2-1 MIAA). Noss won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles and 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.

-- University of Michigan sophomore Sarah Conkle (Bellaire) was 10th in the pole vault (11'13/4") at the three-day Florida State Relays. Sophomore Alisha Cole (Cadillac) was 20th in the 400 (58.41) for the Wolverines.

-- Lake Superior State freshman pitcher Jennie Elliott (Frankfort) improved her record to 3-1 as the Lakers topped Northwood 6-4 on Sunday.

Elliott was also 1 for 1 at the plate for the Lakers (5-18, 1-3 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference).

Elliott also pitched two hitless innings of relief in a 10-0 loss to Saginaw Valley State on Saturday.

-- Albion College freshman Lindi Edger (Charlevoix) was eighth in the 1,500 (5:22.71) and ninth in the 800 (2:35.32) at Saturday's Bluffton Beaver Invitational.

-- Central Michigan junior Kyla Krygier (TC Central) competed in the uneven parallel bars at Saturday's Mid-American Conference Championships at Kent State.

Krygier scored a 9.475 in the event, tying for 35th. The Chippwas were third among the seven teams in the team competition.

-- Saginaw Valley State's golf team finished fourth at the Wisconsin Parkside Invitational on Sunday with a two-round score of 600.

Junior Kasey Hocquard (Cheboygan) shot a 73 on Sunday after opening the tournament with a 77 on Saturday.

-- Alma College junior Katie Porter (Cheboygan) was sixth in the long jump (15'3/4") at the Rhodes Invitational.
