Right to Work talk

lansing — The Michigan Manufacturers Association will host "What is the New Right to Work?" presented by Steven J. Fishman, chair of the Workplace Law Group at Bodman PLC.

The seminar will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the MMA headquarters, located at 620 S. Capitol in Lansing. The cost is $50 per person for MMA members and $75 for others. Preregistration and prepayment are required.

Grow local initiative

traverse city — Organizers of an effort to bolster the area's economy by using more locally produced foods, products, goods and services will meet to assess and expand their efforts.

The Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce and its partners in the "20 Percent Local" campaign will gather from 8 to 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 13, for a breakfast event at Northwestern Michigan College's Hagerty Center.

The event will include a roundtable discussion on topics including identifying successes and challenges in utilizing local vendors, improved branding for the initiative and finding resources to expand the program.

Downtown spaces

harbor springs — Downtown Harbor Springs will host an open house of available business properties in the central business district to rent or purchase from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 16. Properties representatives will be on site to showcase the spaces.

Sponsored by the Harbor Springs Downtown Development Authority, the open house will offer businesses considering Harbor Springs as a location the chance to tour the properties and learn about business opportunities in Harbor Springs. The welcome center for the event is 101 W. Main St. at the corner of State and Main. Maps of available properties will be available and are currently available on the City of Harbor Springs and DDA websites. DDA members will be on hand to answer questions about doing business in Harbor Springs.

Suttons bay — The Leelanau Peninsula Chamber of Commerce will hold Business After Hours at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at Boathouse Vineyards in Lake Leelanau. This event is sponsored by Huntington Bank.

Zonta award apps

traverse city — The Zonta Club of Traverse City is seeking applications for its Outstanding Woman Leader Award. Nominees are being sought for women that have contributed their time and efforts to enrich the region.

Applications are available from any Traverse City Zonta Club member or by calling 421-5229.

Applications must be submitted by a Zonta Club member, but the nominee does not need to be a member of Zonta.

Business workshops

Scottville — The West Shore Community College Business Opportunity Center is offering a series of entrepreneurial workshops.

n Feb. 21 - The Road to Independence — Exploring Entrepreneurship: A workshop to address basic questions about starting a business.

n March 7 - Fundamentals of Writing a Business Plan: This course covers business planning in detail, including marketing, finance, legal and regulatory issues, operations, and information-based planning.

n March 21 - Legal Issues When Starting or Running a Small Business: An introduction to the different types of legal entities that are appropriate for structuring and starting a new business.

n April 4 - Fundamentals of Marketing Your Business: This course covers practical applications of marketing concepts designed to grow a small business.

n April 18 - Fundamentals of Financial Management: Attendees will be introduced to basic accounting concepts and will learn how to apply financial information effectively.
