Free credit counseling available

TRAVERSE CITY — A newly formed nonprofit is offering credit counseling and financial education services to the public.

Community Action Credit Counseling, or CACC, is offering free workshops and one-on-one counseling in partnership with the Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency.

“If a client has income able to sustain a debt management plan, we can try to help them to reduce interest payments on their debt and work with them and their creditors to reduce payments,” said Latitia Garthe-Shiner, a certified consumer debt specialist for CACC. “This is very new and we have a very limited budget. We see a need for financial and credit counseling locally.”

CACC can also help by assessing an individual’s financial situation, establishing a reasonable budget, and setting personal financial goals. For more information contact Garthe-Shiner at 231-947-3780 or by email at lgshiner@nmcaa.net.
