ISLAND grant

TRAVERSE CITY — Oryana Natural Foods Market has announced that the Institute for Sustainable Living, Art and Natural Design is the recipient of the fifth annual Oryana Community Grant.

Every profitable year, Oryana donates up to 10 percent of all end-of-year proceeds (pre-tax) to a local non-profit organization. A non-profit arts, ecology and agricultural organization based in Bellaire, ISLAND will receive a $5,500 donation.

ISLAND will use the grant toward the purchase of a lightweight, enclosed trailer that unpacks into a high-efficiency, three-season food preservation kitchen and workshop space. The trailer will also support drying, fermenting, smoking and meat curing and will serve as a farm-based space to hold classes and food preservation parties so the community can learn techniques of food preservation, meet farmers and enjoy shared work.
