Consumers refund

LANSING — The Michigan Public Service Commission has approved Consumers Energy's proposal to refund $23.3 million to its electric customers via a six-month credit.

The refund relates to a settlement agreement associated with the utility's litigation against the U.S. Department of Energy over claims arising from the DOE's failure to begin accepting spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste for disposal by the 1998 deadline set in the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982.

Consumers Energy claimed damages incurred as a result of DOE's delay in accepting SNF, which is stored at the former Big Rock Point Nuclear Plant and Palisades Nuclear Power Plant.

Residential electric customers using 500 kilowatt-hours of electricity a month will see a decrease of 64 cents on their monthly bill for six months, beginning in January 2013 and ending in June 2013.
