TRAVERSE CITY — Livability.com has named Traverse City among its Top 10 Best Winter Vacation Destinations.

The national website listed Traverse City as number four behind Anchorage, Alaska, Spokane, Wash. and Minneapolis, Minn.

"We chose cities that offer the amenities tourists look for — good, local and independent restaurants, a thriving arts scene, nightlife, shopping and plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities," said Livability.com spokesman John Hood.

The website said Traverse City "has all the ingredients for a great winter vacation — a quaint downtown with beautiful views of Lake Michigan, microbreweries, restaurants, shops, performance venues and lots of snow."

"The area's nine microbreweries, brew pubs and craft beer taprooms helped Traverse City make it onto Draft magazine's list of newest 'Emerging Beer Towns,'" the website noted.

Others in the top 10 included Reno, Nev., Waukesha, Wisc., Missoula, Mont., Bangor, Maine, Concord, N.H. and Casper, Wyo.

Donations needed

CHARLEVOIX — The Retail Committee of the Charlevoix Chamber is sprucing up the town this holiday season by hanging fresh-cut garland and wreaths on the light posts along Bridge Street in the central shopping district. The live greens replace outdated, plastic wreaths that have hung from the lights in the past several years.

While the decorating has begun, the Chamber is still short of funds to cover expenses. Families, businesses and organizations are asked to donate $50 to sponsor an individual lamp post.

To become a sponsor, call 547-2101 or email ferguson@charlevoix.org.
