Nifty Things! opens in Suttons Bay

SUTTONS BAY — A nifty little store is open for business.

Doug and Martee Hickman opened their newest Nifty Things! outlet at 220 N. St. Joseph Ave. in Suttons Bay, expanding their popular retail brand to a community known for its summer tourism traffic and casual window shopping atmosphere.

“An opportunity arose for a really prime piece of space, and we took it,” Doug Hickman said. “We locked it up last October.”

Martee Hickman said the store’s location is a solid match for the store’s unique, novel gift theme.

“We’ve looked at Suttons Bay for a long time and the decision came about because the space was so perfect,” Martee Hickman said. “It has perfect windows so my merchandiser can do her magic. We loved the space and its potential.”

Nifty Things! seeks to be the most unique gift and jewelery store in Northern Michigan, offering everything from handmade clocks to beads and charms and brands like Chamilia, Trollbeads, Kameleon, Jewelpops, Novo and others. Martee Hickman said the goal is to be different.

“If you are looking for a sign that says. ‘I’m outdoorsy, I prefer to get drunk on patios,’ then we are your place,” Martee Hickman said.

The Suttons Bay outlet is the fourth Nifty Things! store in the Grand Traverse region. Others are located in Alden, Traverse City and Elk Rapids. Vanessa Fox Gruenwald, store manager for the new outlet in Suttons Bay, said the community is thankful for the new store.

“Everyone rushed in the first couple of weeks to say ‘Welcome to Suttons Bay,’” Fox Gruenwald said. “Everybody has been really happy, really excited, we are here.”

“We try to offer something for everybody — stuff you just don’t see anywhere else,” Doug Hickman said. “We get (our merchandise) ahead of the markets, six months to a year usually.”
