Benzie students encouraged to get technical

BENZONIA — Students in Benzie County and some surrounding areas can tour a Traverse City manufacturing facility as part of an effort to get kids thinking about a career in skilled trades.

Benzie County Commissioner Roger Griner said the May 19 tour will visit Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District’s Career-Tech Center, then Clark Manufacturing Co. on Aero-Park Drive in Traverse City. Griner said tour organizers believe there are lots of high school students well-suited for careers in precision machining, drafting and design, automotive technology, electrical, construction, welding and fabrication professions.

“We are trying to put some support behind career tech,” Griner said. “Young people can walk out of high school, get good jobs and not have all that debt.”

The county is partnering with Benzie Central Schools, Frankfort-Elberta Area Schools, the nonprofit SEEDS, TBAISD, Cherryland Electric, the Traverse Bay Economic Development Corporation and others to put on the tour. Students from the Glen Lake and Onekama areas are also invited.

The bus tour leaves Benzie Central schools May 19 at 4:30 p.m. and returns at approximately 8 p.m. Pizza will be offered at Clark Manufacturing. Those interested in taking the tour can contact Dan Salyer at Benzie Central Schools at 231-882-4497 x-2213 or by email at salyerd@benzieschools.net.
