Pronger named Munson COO

TRAVERSE CITY — Munson Medical Center President Al Pilong said restructuring executive staff duties will make the hospital more effective, efficient and focused.

Pilong announced Tuesday that Vice President of Operations Derk Pronger was named Munson’s chief operating officer, a position that had been eliminated in 2013.

Pronger will take over responsibility for the hospital’s daily operations.

“It’s more than just renaming his position,” Pilong said. “I wanted a more clearly focused executive leader around hospital operations.”

Pronger will oversee inpatient services such as nursing, pharmacy, oncology, and other departments within the hospital.

Outpatient services, or those offered at Munson’s clinics and offices throughout the region, will be handled by Chief Information Officer Chris Podges.

Pilong said the restructuring will increase focus on outpatient care, which he called a growing component of Munson’s services as more procedures are done at outpatient clinics, such as surgeries provided at ambulatory surgery centers.

No positions were lost or created during the restructuring.

“It provides appropriate leadership to match with the evolving nature of our care delivery system,” Pilong said.

Pronger joined Munson in 2012 after working at Beaumont Health Systems. He was raised in Traverse City, received his associate degree from Northwestern Michigan College, his undergraduate degree in accounting from Purdue University and his master’s degree in health services administration from University of Detroit Mercy.
