Elmbrook celebrates a half century

TRAVERSE CITY — This is a special year for Elmbrook golf course.

The track celebrates 50 years in business along with its contribution to northern Michigan history as the first 18-hole public golf course in the Traverse City area.

“It was the first 18-hole public golf course in the whole region,” said Elmbrook co-owner Carolyn Olson. “It’s special because people are very comfortable at our facility.”

The course is co-owned by Olson, her husband, John, brother Wes Nelson and his wife Arlene. Vern Nelson -- Carolyn Olson's and Wes Nelson’s father -- was one of the six founders of the course and helped design the layout.

“There’s a sense of tradition here -- 50 years of tradition,” said Dennis Sternburgh, Elmbrook's manager. “The course goes deeply into the roots of the community. Most people who are in their 50s and 60s and who learned to play golf in Traverse City probably learned to play here. We are all extended family out here.”
