New name, updated inventory for local store

TRAVERSE CITY — More than just the name has changed at Mahoney’s Spirits and Edibles.

The former Maxbauer’s After Hours party store, located on the corner of West Front and Maple, has a new look and expanded inventory.

“We are in an area with tons of competition and had to make some changes to separate ourselves from the rest,” said store manager George Nemetz.

Mike Deering, owner of the store for the past eight years, changed the name after selling his meat market business that shared the Maxbauer name.

“It was part of the deal to change the name,” Deering said. “Mahoney’s is named after my grandmother’s maiden name.”

After adopting the new name, Deering said he decided to concentrate on the adult beverage side of the business.

In addition to standard selections of beer, wine and liquor, Mahoney’s offers an expanded inventory of liquors and craft beers.

“We wanted the place to be a little more upscale, handling harder-to-find items,” said Nemetz, a self-proclaimed beer geek.

Craft beer offerings include Dark Horse Brewing Company’s Plead the 5th Imperial Stout, Shock Top’s Honeycrisp Apple Wheat and Southern Tier’s Eurotrash Pilz.

Upscale spirits like The Botanist artisanal dry gin, Ron Anejo Pampero Aniversano special reserve rum and Hangar One hand distilled vodka are new additions to the well-stocked shelves. Also new are homemade soups, sandwiches and salads.

“Our chef uses her family recipes for the soups, even makes her own noodles for the chicken noodle,” Nemetz said.

Chef Jen Scott prepares daily specials like pork barbecue and macaroni and cheese along with soups including cheddar ale, tomato artichoke and Nantucket chowder. Plans for an extended variety of specials will come along with the renovation of the onsite kitchen.

“We are meeting with a kitchen designer and soon plan to have the interior looking as good as the outside,” Deering said.
