State unemployment rate unchanged

LANSING — Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 8.9 percent in January was unchanged over the month, according to data released Wednesday by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget.

Both total employment and the workforce rose slightly over the month by 4,000 as the number of unemployed in the state was unchanged.

The Michigan jobless rate in January 2013 was three-tenths of a percentage point below the state’s revised January 2012 rate of 9.2 percent. The national jobless rate decreased by four-tenths of a percentage point over this period.

The state’s unemployment rate in January was 1 percentage point above the national rate of 7.9 percent. The U.S. jobless rate increased over the month by one-tenth of a percentage point.

Online survey workshop set

TRAVERSE CITY — NorthSky Nonprofit Network is sponsoring a professional development session, “Conducting Online Surveys,” from noon to 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, March 14, at the Northwestern Michigan College University Center campus.

The session will be led by Freya Bradford, NorthSky senior consultant and evaluation project manager, and provides an overview of various online survey options. The fee is $12. Participants are invited to bring a lunch.

Ad agency announces move to Detroit

DETROIT — Advertising agency Campbell Ewald will move to downtown Detroit from its current headquarters in suburban Warren, bringing with it about 700 employees, it was announced Wednesday.

Company chairman and chief executive Bill Ludwig and Detroit Mayor Dave Bing held a news conference to announce the move. They said Campbell Ewald will occupy the former J.L. Hudson Co. warehouse space adjacent to Ford Field.

Ludwig didn’t discuss whether the company will be getting any tax breaks from the city.

Campbell is expected to move late this year or early in 2014.
