Veterans job fair
lansing — In collaboration with more than 60 companies, the Michigan National Guard will host a Veterans Job Fair from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday through Friday, Nov. 7-9, at the Michigan National Guard Joint Forces Headquarters, 3411 N. Martin Luther King Blvd. in Lansing.
The events are free and open to any veteran and/or spouse.
Dress is business casual and prospective employees should bring several copies of their resume for employers.
Several employers will interview and hire on the premises.

traverse city — The Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for its 2012 Distinguished Service Award. Nominations will be accepted through Nov. 2.
Nominees must be residents of the chamber's five-county service area, but aren't required to be chamber members.
Non-members may also submit names for consideration.
Letters of nomination should include the name and contact information of the individual being nominated, and a detailed description of how that person fulfills the intent of the award.
Nominators should also include their address, daytime phone number and email address should follow up by the committee be required.
Nominations should be submitted to the chamber office in care of the DSA Committee, 202 E. Grandview Parkway, Traverse City, 49684.
The award will be presented at the chamber's annual meeting and celebration set for Jan. 25, 2013.
Sleep Out planned
traverse city — The second annual Traverse City Sleep Out, to raise awareness and funding for home heating assistance needs in the region, begins at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Traverse City's Open Space and continues through the night.
The Traverse City Chamber launched the initiative last fall to support the efforts of the Coalition to Keep Michigan Warm.

EPA grant awarded
traverse city — The Grand Traverse Conservation District has received a two-year, $399,971 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency's Great Lakes Restoration Initiative to strengthen efforts to combat invasive species in northwest lower Michigan.
Along with partner organizations, the conservation district will start surveying for high priority invasive plants in Benzie and Manistee Counties this fall. Any private property owners in these counties that would like to participate in treatment efforts for phragmites or Japanese knotweed are encouraged to call their local Conservation District.

Talent SummitThe Michigan Manufacturers Association, in partnership with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, will hold a statewide summit to address what they are describing as a talent crisis among manufacturers on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at the University Club. The full-day event will feature seven presentations by 20 industry experts including manufacturers, economic developers, educators and training professionals. Panels throughout the day will showcase recent training success stories, highlight local efforts by manufacturers, provide examples of best practices in recruiting and discuss new ways to solve the immediate challenges of getting trained workers on the job. boyne city — Great Lakes Energy has expanded its appliance recycling program. Members can schedule a free pick-up of an old refrigerator or freezer and receive a $30 rebate. They can now receive an additional $15 for each old air conditioner or dehumidifier that is picked up at the same time as their old refrigerator or freezer.
