Numbers show crops production is higher

Except for sugarbeets, yields are still mostly lower than last year

LANSING — The U.S. Department of Agriculture has released its Michigan October Crop Production Report.

Data shows that crop yields for corn and soybeans were negatively affected by a drier-than-normal summer, though yields are not expected to be as bad as first thought.

"The corn and soybean yield outlook has improved since the Sept. 1 Crop Production Report," said Jay Johnson, director of the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service Michigan Field Office.

In fact, Michigan corn yield is up four bushels from September's report, to 118 bushels per acre. That's down 35 bushels from last year. Total production is expected to be 276.1 million bushels, which is 17.6 percent lower than 2011.

Michigan soybean production is forecast to total 77.6 million bushels, which is 9.1 percent less than one year ago. Anticipated yield is 39 bushels per acre, which is two bushels higher than predicted in September, but down five from 2011.

Sugarbeet growers can anticipate a yield of 28 tons per acre. That's actually up four tons from last year and unchanged from last month's report.

Production in dry beans is down, however. Yield is predicted at 1,850 pounds per acre — down 150 pounds from last year.

On the national level, corn production is forecast at 10.7 bushels, which is 13 percent lower than 2011. Based on conditions as of Oct. 1, yields are expected to average 122.0 bushels per acre, down 25.2 bushels from the 2011 average.

Soybean production nationally is expected to be at 2.86 billion bushels, an 8 percent reduction over last year. As of Oct. 1, yields are expected to average 37.8 bushels per acre, which is higher than indicated in September, but down 4.1 bushels from last year.
