Busby accepts new position

TRAVERSE CITY — Dan Busby has been named Verifier for the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP).

Recently honored as the first-ever recipient of the Michigan Farm Bureau's Ecology Champion Award, Busby is a 12-year veteran of the Grand Traverse Conservation District

MAEAP is a voluntary, non-regulatory program that helps farms of all sizes and commodities prevent or minimize their impacts on local rivers, lakes and groundwater systems. More than 100 farms in the Grand Traverse region have been verified under this program, resulting in the prevention of 11,000 tons of sediment, 18 tons of nitrogen and nine tons of phosphorous from entering area waterways each year.

"While we are sad to see Dan leave the Conservation District after 12 years of service, we know this as a tremendous opportunity for him to take the next step in his career," Grand Traverse Conservation District Executive Director Tree Sturman said in a press release. "In his new capacity as MAEAP Verifier, Dan will be interacting with farmers throughout Northwest Michigan, and we are comforted in knowing he will never be far from the Boardman River Nature Center, a facility which he helped build with his own two hands"

An open house to honor Busby is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 6, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Boardman River Nature Center, 1450 Cass Road.
