---- — LANSING — Nine people have been named to oversee a $1.6 billion endowment created under the overhaul of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.

Gov. Rick Snyder on Wednesday announced members of the Michigan Health Endowment Fund Board chosen by him and legislative leaders. The fund will work to improve public health and health care access, particularly for seniors and children, with nearly $1.6 billion from Blue Cross over 18 years.

A law signed this year to modernize Blue Cross included the health insurer shedding its charitable “social mission” status by committing the $1.6 billion.

The money may be spent on infant mortality, wellness and fitness programs and other areas.

The board includes Lynn Alexander, Michael Williams, Tim Damschroder, Keith Pretty, Rob Fowler, Jim Murray, Susan Jandernoa, Cindy Estrada and Margaret Robinson.
