Phillips Lifestyles moves to bigger facility

TRAVERSE CITY — Phillips Lifestyles is moving to a new location more than twice the size of its current location across from Sam’s Club on U.S. 31.

The Traverse City store that sells fireplaces, hot tubs and game equipment has been in business for 34 years, since it began in owner Richard Phillips’ basement. The new site will open July 1 and offer more space to add and show off products.

“We’ve been very limited where we are,” Phillips said. “We’ve been wanting to do outdoor fireplaces and kitchens, but we can’t do anything outdoors here. This gives us a large, covered outdoor area for those kitchens and it’s going to allow us to show more product.”

The larger site also will allow Phillips Lifestyles to have its warehouse and repair shop on the same site as the store.

The business is moving into the old Wickes Lumber building farther south on U.S. 31. It’s a longer hike from Traverse City, but Phillips said the distance won’t hurt the business or its customers.

“We’re a destination,” he said. “People, if they’re going to buy a spa or a billiard table or a fireplace, they’re probably going to look for Phillips Lifestyles because we’ve been around for so long.”

Harbor Freight, a discount tool store with locations around the country, will open in Phillips Lifestyles’ place on July 29.
