New shoe store opens in Traverse City

TRAVERSE CITY — Denise Leeds opened her shoe store, LOLA’S, on Front Street with the goal of offering cool shoes that everyday people can afford.

“My goal was fashionable, trendy and reasonably priced shoes, plus handbags, accessories, pillows,” Leeds said. “Fashion meets affordability. You won’t have buyer’s remorse here, and you are still looking good.”

Leeds opened LOLA’S in September and it’s her second go-around in the Traverse City retail sector. She previously opened a shoe boutique, Panache, on Union Street, more than a decade ago, then sold the business.

Her new business is at 123 E. Front St. Suite #1, and features an urban feel and unique accessories such as couch pillows with the embroidered words “Mr. Right” and “Mrs. Always Right.”

Leeds said a close friend, Mary Herzog, owns the adjacent boutique, Spirals, where Leeds previously worked. Customers of the boutique remembered her from Panache and regularly asked when she was going to open a new shoe store.

“People kept telling me, ‘You should do it again,’” she said.

Leeds followed through on the requests and named her new store after her poodle. There are plans for a brief shutdown in January to allow for a complete remodel of the store’s interior, along with an interior door

“I am pleasantly surprised at how well it’s going,” Leeds said. “I wanted to be open for Fall and then Christmas.”
