Elixir opens on Union Street

TRAVERSE CITY — Great tasting food also can be good for you.

That’s Jena Hullman’s philosophy at her new Elixir Café and Restoratives at 517 S. Union St. The cafe features fresh specialty juices and drinks, a full breakfast and lunch lineup from head chef Andrew Hermann, and unique menu offerings called Bowls of Goodness -- items with titles like Devils on Horseback, Braised, Grass-fed Beef, Rock Shrimp and Winter Panzanella.

The restaurant also serves up a lengthy list of dishes for kids. A full dinner menu is in the works for this summer.

“I want a place where people can come here and have really good food, and they can know that when they are feeding themselves or their kids, that there’s nothing in here that’s bad for you,” Hullman said.

Food, health, and community are at the heart of Hullman’s business tenets. Hullman, 39, is proprietor of the business Big Beautiful Life, which sits immediately adjacent to the cafe. Big Beautiful Life offers chiropractic services, massage, and nutritional testing, and Hullman wants to use the Elixir to hold community gatherings promoting wellness and citizen engagement.

Hullman, 39, had her eyes on the space next door to Big Beautiful Life for a while and, when it opened, she jumped on the chance to open Elixir. The cafe’s name, Hullman said, stands for a “magical liquid that extends life or improves health.”

“I thought that was perfect,” Hullman said. “Our motto here is make food your medicine.

“People think you have to sacrifice taste for healthy,” Hullman said. “That’s not what we are doing here. We are showing that this is just an amazing restaurant where you get really good food, it’s affordable, and it happens to be healthy and clean.”
