Businesses combine activity, lodging for easy vacation planning

TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City Tourism President Brad Van Dommelen believes the city has to fight for visitors, and local businesses that package activities, lodging and meals under one price makes tourists turn toward Traverse City.

“Tourism is competitive,” Van Dommelen said. “People have a lot of choice in places to go. If we offer them something enticing they might choose our destination.”

Packages in which hotels plan visitors’ weekends and charge one rate tends to ease their vacation planning and budgeting stress.

“Packaging components just creates an experience, and when you package things together there’s a perceived value,” he said.

Grand Traverse Resort and Spa is offering special packages for both wine and beer drinkers to get a taste of some of the area’s specialty drinks.

One is a beer tour, in which customers tour The Filling Station, North Peak Brewing and Bravo Zulu Brewing and get two nights at the resort.

“It’s certainly an opportunity to sample a lot of different types of beer,” said J. Michael DeAgostino, public relations manager for Grand Traverse Resort and Spa. “Beer seems to be up-and-coming, and having the opportunity to sample craft beers and a variety of them is very appealing. As a beer drinker I can attest to that.”

The other is a wine and spa package; customers get breakfasts at Sweetwater American Bistro, a VIP ticket to Bowers Harbor Vineyard and discounted treatment at the resort spa. DeAgostino said similar packages have sold out twice before.
