Job seekers offered guidance

TRAVERSE CITY –— Job hunters take note: a group of students from Northwestern Michigan College wants to help you land your dream job.

The students in the NMC professional communications class are partnering with the Traverse Area Human Resources Association to collect donations of professional work clothes for northern Michigan job seekers. The clothes are free to any job seeker who attends the Career Kickstart event at the NMC Welcome Center on April 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We will have all the clothes on racks, just like a huge store,” said NMC instructor Kristy McDonald, who is teaching the communications class.” You can take what you want for free.”

TAHRA volunteers also will be at the event to offer resume critiques, mock job interviews and career coaching. Communications student Riley Freeland said Career Kickstart’s goal is to help those in need.

“We are targeting the under and unemployed, but everyone is welcome even if they think they just need a little help with their interview skills,” Freeland said. “We want to give people another chance if they’ve been trying to get a job but maybe they don’t have the clothes or skills necessary to get the interview. We are hoping to help them ... so they can finally get the career they’ve always wanted.”

McDonald said her students gain communications experience by reaching out to area businesses for donations.

The clothing drive runs until March 27. Anyone wishing to donate can drop off clean, gently used, professional clothing and accessories at the Record-Eagle, 120 W. Front St., or at three NMC locations. Those locations include Beckett or Osterlin buildings on the main campus or the Parsons-Stulen Building at the Aero Park campus.

Free clothing pickup service is also available and local businesses can participate by placing collection bins in their buildings. Call Will Bennett at 269-967-5315 to schedule a pickup or have a bin delivered.

More information is also available at the Career Kickstart Facebook page.
