Full service restaurant slated for GT mall

---- — TRAVERSE CITY — A downstate company is slated to open a second full-service restaurant at the Grand Traverse Mall this year.

Diversified Restaurant Holdings Inc. applied for a Garfield Township permit to open Bagger Dave's Legendary Hamburger Tavern near the mall's food court at the site of the former Garfield's Restaurant and Pub. Diversified Restaurant Holdings also owns and operates the Buffalo Wild Wings franchise in one of the mall's outer lots on the corner of U.S. 31 and South Airport Road.

"They are looking to begin construction in a couple of weeks," said project designer Fred Meinberg of Krieger Klatt Architects, Inc. of Royal Oak. "The whole thing will be completely gutted and reconstructed per Bagger Dave's design."

Southfield-based Diversified Restaurant Holdings is one of the nation's largest Buffalo Wild Wings franchisees with 34 properties in four states. The publicly traded company created the Bagger Dave's restaurant brand and owns and operates 13 stores in four states, with plans to open six more Bagger Dave's this year, including the Traverse City location.

The sit-down restaurant chain will have a full bar with craft beers and build-your-own burger menus.

The restaurant will have about 215 seats, including 36 chairs in a covered outdoor patio separated from the main restaurant with garage doors that can be opened in the summer.

The outdoor seating requires a township zoning permit, said Brian VanDenBrand, deputy Garfield Township planner. The permit request will be reviewed at the township planning commission's June 12 meeting.

Meinberg said construction will take about three months, which would allow the restaurant to open in the fall.
