Vacuum sales whiz, 10, cleans up

TRAVERSE CITY — Talk about a young entrepreneur.

Angel Zoulek, at just 10 years old, sells vacuums in northern Michigan to anyone willing to listen to her lengthy sales pitch. She earns a little money from her sales and donates 20 percent to the Cherryland Humane Society.

“I wanted to earn a little pocket cash,” Angel said. “I also wanted to support the Cherryland Humane Society to provide for a better future for animals. I’ve always loved animals ever since I was a baby. I’ve never gotten into dolls. It was always animals.”

Angel came up with the idea to sell Speedy Maid vacuums by watching her parents operate their vacuum sale and repair businesses in Acme. The fourth-grader figured she’d give it a try and since learned a few tough lessons about the business world. She’s sold one vacuum so far.

“Its been pretty hard (but) this is what I expected it to be,” she said. “I’ve grown up in the office all my life, so I know a few tricks from the book. You really never take no for an answer. Do your work because you might get paid, you might not.”

Angel already sounds like a sales pro as she demonstrated a Speedy Maid model with its “two suction fans, two ... filters, and two suction intakes.” She boasts that the vacuums are American made, while many of the Speedy Maid competitors “are owned in China.”

“I’m doing door-knocking,” Angel said. “Unfortunately, I can’t drive yet.”

Their daughter’s ambition impresses Angel’s parents, Pete and Laura. They help her go door-to-door and they tacked up more than 90 fliers around town.

“I think it’s really great,” Laura Zoulek said. “I’m touched by it and I’m really proud of her. If she wants to do it, go for it.”
