Credit union tenders scholarships

TRAVERSE CITY — A northern Michigan credit union is offering a scholarship program available to students in the Grand Traverse region.

David Leusink, president and chief executive officer of Bay Winds Federal Credit Union, said the 10 scholarships are for $1,000 each.

The goal is to help families alleviate the burdens of increasing college costs.

“We started it a few years ago with $5,000 and now it’s up to $10,000,” Leusink said. “The cost of a college education is going up each day and we hope we can help ease those costs.”

Students must be from a high school in any of the 10 counties Bay Winds serves, which includes each of the counties in the Grand Traverse region. Scholarship recipients are selected based on scholastic achievement, leadership, community service, financial need and composition of a short essay question.

Application packets are available from any Bay Winds branches or downloaded at www.baywindsfcs.com/youth. Entries and accompanying materials must be received or postmarked by March 31.
