Delta to add summer airline seats

TRAVERSE CITY — More of Traverse City’s summer traffic will take to the skies.

Delta Airlines will add 40 to 60 seats to its daily summer service from Detroit to Traverse City starting in May. It will use a 110-seat Boeing 717 aircraft between the two cities instead of smaller, regional aircraft that have between 50 and 70 seats.

“Our market is proving we’re a good return on investment for the air carriers,” airport director Kevin Klein said.

Delta Airlines also provides flights to Atlanta, New York’s LaGuardia and Minneapolis airports. All Delta flights will have first-class and coach options this summer.

Cherry Capitol Airport grew 4.5 percent in 2013, while the national average airport growth was about .5 percent, Klein said. Airport traffic has grown by 90,000 passengers since 2011.

Klein said growth can lead to more opportunities for tourists to visit, easier travel for large groups and lower ticket prices.

“In a market like Traverse City, when we add more seats we get the opportunity for more low fares to be in our market,” Klein said.

United Airlines announced it will maintain its summer service, and American Airlines hasn’t announced its summer service schedule.
