GRAWN — A retailer that specializes in salvaging used building materials for resale is expanding to Grand Rapids.
Odom Reusable Building Materials Owner Bruce Odom said he’s targeting a spring opening for a second store in the Comstock Park area of Michigan’s second-largest city.
“For seven or eight years it’s been on my mind to have a second store, but things just didn’t quite come together,” Odom said. “The last time we were thinking about it, the recession hit.”
Odom Reusable’s Grawn outlet is located at 5555 Brentwood Ave. N., off County Road 633. The business employs waste reduction as part of its business model, and salvages for resale usable construction materials that might otherwise be thrown away.
Products at the store can range from flooring, lighting, and cabinets to school gym lockers. Even a flower bed in front of the store is filled with flowers rescued from other building sites. Products are available for institutional, commercial and residential customers.
Odom said the Grawn outlet witnessed significant sales, clearing the way for expansion. The purchase of an existing building that will house the new store in Grand Rapids is pending.
“It’s a big city and there is a lot going on there,” said Odom, who’s operated the business for 16 years. “It feels like the timing is right ... We just had a real good, strong year. We’ve had the best late summer through fall into December we’ve ever had in our history.”
