FSA sets deadline for acreage reports
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Farm Service Agency set an Aug. 15 deadline for farmers and growers to file acreage reports for all crops and land uses in order to qualify for various assistance programs.
Producers are required to report all of their crop land, including the field planting date, to qualify for direct and counter-cyclical program payments, commodity loans and loan deficiency payments, conservation reserve program rental payments and the non-insured crop disaster assistance program.

DTCA offering shopping bags
TRAVERSE CITY -- A reusable shopping bag program has been initiated by the Downtown Traverse City Association.
The 16-by-20-inch shopping bags are available for $1 at nearly two dozen downtown businesses, or from the Downtown Development Authority office at 303 E. State St.
"Downtown Traverse City has made a conscious effort toward our community and preserving our environment by recycling, reducing and now reusing," said Colleen Paveglio, the DDA's marketing director. "Like many others, we are happy to offer reusable bags to reduce waste in our community."

GT County debuts online job system
TRAVERSE CITY -- Grand Traverse County launched an online employment application system where applicants can apply for county job openings through a secure county Web site.
The system will allow the public to search and apply for vacant county positions around the clock on the Internet.
Applicants can create and store multiple application versions and receive application receipt confirmation via e-mail. Updates on the status of applications are also available, along with automatic notification of job postings.

Foreclosure training session is scheduled
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Benzie Housing Council will hold a "foreclosure rebound" volunteer training session July 29 to train area residents to help families facing default and foreclosure.
Volunteers will be trained to be negotiators and follow-up mentors. Negotiators will work with lenders to find answers to homeowners' difficulties, while follow-up mentors work with homeowners on budgeting and credit repair to find long-term solutions.
The training session will be held from 2:30 to 5 p.m. at the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce office on Grandview Parkway in Traverse City.
Materials will be provided, but space is limited.
