'Fallen Comrade' to be dedicated

THOMPSONVILLE -- Crystal Mountain Resort will dedicate the newest addition to its Michigan Legacy Art Park on Aug. 14.

"Fallen Comrade" is a sculpture by David Greenwood that recognizes Michigan's Tuskegee Airmen and the state's contribution to World War II. The work was supported by individual donations and grants from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

The sculpture will be dedicated at a 2 p.m. ceremony followed by an awards gala at 6:30 p.m. Ticket information is available by calling (231) 378-4963 or at www.michlegacyartpark.org.

Ferry service cuts prices for summer

MILWAUKEE -- A company that ferries riders across Lake Michigan is cutting some prices by 40 percent for the next two months.

Lake Express makes two daily roundtrips between Milwaukee and Muskegon. It usually charges $91 each way.

But for roundtrip patrons who take the 6 a.m. cruise from Milwaukee or the 11 p.m. cruise from Muskegon, one of the two legs will cost only $19.

The deal runs through all of July and August.

The promotion can be combined with another Lake Express deal in which kids under 18 ride for free when accompanied by a parent or guardian. That deal also runs until Aug. 31

Lake Express can accommodate 250 passengers and 46 vehicles. Each trip takes about 21/2 hours.

Cherry Capital reports more traffic

TRAVERSE CITY -- Cherry Capital Airport reported slightly higher passenger traffic in May compared to a year ago, the only airport in Michigan to do so.

The airport recorded more than 26,600 passengers in May, according to figures from the state Department of Transportation, an increase of almost 1 percent from May 2008. Airport Director Stephen Cassens said the modest hike "is something we are thrilled to see in today's marketplace."

Cherry Capital was the only airport in the state to report an increase in passenger numbers for May. Passenger traffic was down 8 percent in Grand Rapids, down 12.4 percent in Pellston, off by 15.6 percent in Flint and down more than 40 percent in Lansing. Passenger traffic at Wayne County Metro airport near Detroit, the state's largest, was not available for May but is down by close to 30 percent for the year.

Passenger traffic at Cherry Capital for 2009 through May is down about 8 percent from last year, according to the state.

Mowing cutbacks save millions

LANSING -- For the second year, the state is cutting grass along highways and interstates only once in most areas.

The reduced mowing schedule is expected to save budget-strapped Michigan millions of dollars.

State Department of Transportation spokeswoman Kari Arend tells the Lansing State Journal the policy won't create significant safety issues for drivers.

She says motorists should report problems as they arise, and MDOT officials will determine whether more mowing is needed.

Arend says second mowings were needed in just a few areas last year.
