TRAVERSE CITY -- Huntington Bank's regional president for northern Michigan will retire this month.
Bruce Reavely, a 38-year veteran of the banking industry, will retire as of May 30, bank officials said Wednesday.
Reavely's long career in banking began with his service in the U.S. Army, where he worked with the financial operations of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization at its headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. After his military service he worked 11 years at American Bank and Trust in Lansing, before he joined the staff of Traverse City-based Empire National Bank in the spring of 1983.
Reavely worked 17 years for Empire National, where he rose to a group vice president position managing retail operations, purchasing, marketing and other functions. Empire merged with Huntington in 2000, and Reavely was named regional president the following year.
Reavely, 60, said there were plenty of changes in the transition from a local bank to a multi-state, regional operation.
"I think like anything in life, change is hard," he said. "We were fortunate with Huntington to keep the autonomy and freedom that we needed...they've been a great partner of ours."
Reavely's community involvement includes service on the United Way of Northwest Michigan's board of directors, where he's immediate past president. He serves as treasurer of the Munson Health Care Foundation, on the fund-raising committee of the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA and on the 211 Community Call Center task force. He's also involved in the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Corp.
Reavely said he'll remain active in those efforts in retirement while he and his wife, Laura, divide time between homes in Michigan and Florida.
Huntington Bancshares Inc. is a $55 billion regional bank holding company, with its west Michigan operations based in Grand Rapids. Huntington has more than 700 branches in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
