TRAVERSE CITY -- Financial assistance is available through the U.S. Department of Agriculture for landowners interested in constructing "high tunnels" or hoop houses to grow local produce.
The USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service in Michigan is participating in a 3-year pilot program to study the use of high tunnels to reduce pesticide use, extend the growing season, increase yields and provide other benefits to growers.
The tunnels provide a protected environment for fruits and vegetables and increase early and late-season temperatures to extend crop production.
The program provides funding of one high tunnel per farm, with funding levels determined on a square foot basis up to nearly $5,000. The application deadline is Feb. 19 and applications must be submitted to a local NCRS field office.
