Shooting suspect to be arrested, charged

TRAVERSE CITY — A Traverse City man who said he accidentally shot his girlfriend in a failed suicide attempt is expected to be arrested today.

Police responded Tuesday evening to a report of an accidental shooting in an apartment at Three Mile Road and Aero Park Drive and found Monica June Anderson, 28, dead from a gunshot. Anderson's boyfriend Robert Caldwell, 33, told authorities he was trying to kill himself but accidentally shot her.

Traverse City Police Capt. Brian Heffner said Caldwell has been under 24-hour guard at Munson Medical Center after surgery for a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the hand.

Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Bob Cooney is reviewing the case for charges. Police will transfer Caldwell to the county jail after his expected release from the hospital today.
