FROM STAFF REPORTS
TRAVERSE CITY — The state plans to close several Michigan State Police posts in northern Michigan, including the Traverse City post, the Record-Eagle learned.
Other planned closures include posts in Manistee, Kalkaska, Cheboygan and possibly Petoskey. The state police 7th District headquarters, now based in Traverse City, could be based elsewhere, under the plan.
Top state police officials, including leaders from the northern Michigan posts, met today in Lansing to discuss post closings and other matters.
Northern Michigan state police facilities in Gaylord, Cadillac and Houghton Lake would remain open. It's not clear how the post closures will affect employees at the various posts.
State officials did not immediately respond to requests for details on the planned post closures.
