FROM STAFF REPORTS
TRAVERSE CITY – A Florida race promoter’s planned half-marathon won’t get traction in Traverse City.
City commissioners cited concerns with Reinke Sports Group’s events in other communities across the nation, and declined to support Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan’s request to be the race’s nonprofit sponsor.
The city requires such sponsorship for events in the city. Promoter Dean Reinke planned an Oct. 23 race here, but Traverse city Mayor Chris Bzdok said problems with Reinke races elsewhere soured commissioners.
“We have a really good, emerging reputation as a place for great races,” Bzdok said. “Why would you open yourself up for problems?”
It’s not yet known if Reinke will attempt to obtain support from another local government in an effort to save the race. Participants are charged $60 to take part in the run and Reinke said entry fees are nonrefundable.
