7:35pm: Board gives go-ahead to biomass plant

TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City Light & Power's board voted tonight to "pursue development" of a wood-burning power plant in Traverse City.

The board voted 4-2 in favor of the decision. Board members Jim Carruthers and Ralph Soffredine opposed the measure, and board member John Welch was absent.

Carruthers and Soffredine are the only two elected members of Light & Power's board. Both also are city commissioners.

The pair wanted to delay the decision to allow time for more public input.

See Wednesday's Record-Eagle for more details.
