Warnings posted at local beaches

TRAVERSE CITY — Strong storms and heavy rain likely caused elevated E. coli levels at two local beaches.

Swimmers are encouraged to avoid contact with water above the waist at East Bay Park and Bryant Park beaches because of elevated E. coli levels, according to a Grand Traverse County Health Department report released Thursday.

The E. coli levels are low enough that swimmers can wade, fish and boat in the water there. Water samples taken Wednesday at West End, Clinch Park and Traverse City State Park beaches reveal that E. coli levels are low enough for full body contact.

E. coli levels are more apt to increase after a storm, the report shows.
