E. coli levels elevated at local beaches

TRAVERSE CITY — Swimmers are urged to avoid the water at East Bay Park until E. coli levels subside.

The Grand Traverse County Health Department Thursday advised swimmers to avoid any contact with the water at East Bay Park because of elevated E. coli levels in samples taken Wednesday. Strong storms and heavy rain this week likely caused the elevated levels.

Officials also are advising only partial body contact at Bryant Park. Samples taken Wednesday at West End, Clinch Park and Traverse City State Park beaches showed E. coli levels remained low enough for full body contact.

Water at East Bay and Bryant parks will be sampled again today, and results will be available Friday.
