Authorites charge sex assault suspect

TRAVERSE CITY — Authorities charged an Alden man with crimes for sexually assaulting an 8-year-old boy in Traverse City.

Brandon James Smith, a registered sex offender, is charged with one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of aggravated indecent exposure. He was arrested Wednesday and remains at the Grand Traverse County Jail.

The boy said Smith followed him into an apartment near the Grand Traverse County Civic Center on Oct. 25. The boy told investigators Smith touched him inappropriately and then exposed himself.

Smith in 2008 was convicted of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct in Grand Traverse County. Court records from that case show he groped a girl, then 14, at a local store.
