TRAVERSE CITY — The mother of a Traverse City woman who died of a gunshot Tuesday evening confirmed her identity today to the Record-Eagle.
Monica June Anderson, 28, died after a shooting at her apartment on Aero Park Drive and Three Mile Road. Sandy Anderson, of Peshawbestown in Leelanau County, said family members were in mourning for her daughter, Monica Anderson.
She also confirmed her daughter was in a relationship with Robert Caldwell, 33, who lived with Monica in the apartment.
Authorities have yet to confirm the victim and suspect's identities and continue to investigate.
An apartment neighbor described the victim as a "very sweet lady" who had an oft-volatile relationship with a live-in boyfriend.
"I have heard them in the past arguing outside," said resident Taneya Lamson.
A 33-year-old man who called police and spoke of his possible suicide attempt is hospitalized after apparently shooting himself in the hand.
Lamson said the couple lived with two children, a boy and girl who often played with her own daughter.
Lamson's mother Bonnie Habrecht was babysitting when the shooting occurred in the nearby apartment at about 10:25 p.m.. Habrecht said she heard a "pounding" noise.
"Twenty minutes later I heard a commotion outside and heard someone hollering, 'Put the gun down. Put the gun down,'" she said. "I believe that was the police because my daughter said the police were on the scene."
Police had already taped off the building by the time Lamson arrived. Detectives continued their investigation into the morning and could be seen removing bags of evidence from the apartment. Officers on the scene declined to comment.
