TRAVERSE CITY — Maybe you’ve noticed the red ribbons ringing trees in downtown Traverse City — more than 100 of them during the month of February.

The ribbons commemorate the National Heart Association’s Go Red for Women health awareness campaign. As part of that, Munson Medical Center will offer Heart-to-Heart screenings next week to area women — and men.

The by-appointment screenings, which cost $55, will start Monday and run through Feb. 25. Grants also are available, said registered nurse Mary McManemy, coordinator of the Munson Medical Center’s Cardiac Prevention and Rehabilitation program.

“Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of both women and men in the United States,” she said.

Screenings and tests will include blood pressure, body mass index, stress and depression levels, nutrition review, smoking, alcohol assessments, a family medical history review, as well as blood test for glucose, lipid profile and cholesterol. Participants will leave with a personalized action plan including information on reducing risks, improving heart health and further cardiac care referrals, if needed.

“It’s a two-step question approval process,” McManemy said. “We ask how many people live in their home and total household income.”
