Bums use 3 homers to beat Freedom

Burch, Gusrang, Higgs go deep in 5-4 victory

TRAVERSE CITY — Sean Gusrang and Travis Higgs hit back-to-back fifth-inning home runs to lead the Traverse City Beach Bums to a 5-4 home victory Monday over Florence.

Brian Heere drove in Kyle Eveland with an RBI single later in the fifth to plate what would become the game-winning run.

It was the third straight win for the Beach Bums, who lead the East Division by four games over Southern Illinois and own the Frontier League's best record at 35-17.

Chase Burch led off the second inning with a solo homer — his eighth of the season and second in as many games — and Jeff Flagg would score in the same frame on a balk.

Higgs' homer was his first of the year, while Gusrang's was his seventh.

Reid Kelly gave up nine hits in six innings, but walked none. He surrendered three runs and struck out five to earn the win and improve to 7-2.

Matt Miller went 1.2 scoreless innnings and Scott Mueller worked a 1-2-3 ninth frame for his 13th save of the season, tying Evansville's Eric Massingham for the league lead.
