Beach Bums beat Joliet Slammers

TRAVERSE CITY — Scott Woodward homered and drove in two runs to help the Traverse City Beach Bums stay atop the Frontier League’s East Division.

The Bums topped Joliet 5-3 on Friday.

Lake Erie beat the Frontier Greys 8-4 to keep pace in the East Division standings, one game back with five contests remaining.

Woodward’s two-out solo shot put Traverse City up 4-2 after four innings. The Beach Bums scored single runs in each of the first four innings.

Carlo Testa came in on a Jose Vargas first-inning RBI single, Woodward drive in Sean Gusrang in the second and Vargas doubled and scored on a third-inning wild pitch.

Chase Burch came across for an insurance in the eighth on an Andrew Heck sacrifice.

Jake Sabol (10-5) earned the win with five innings of work, giving up 10 hits, one walk and three runs. His 10th win of the season moves him up into a third-place tie in that category with Southern Illinois’ Blake Nation. TC teammate Scott Dunn has 15 wins to lead all pitchers by at least three victories.

Kyle Teague tossed two scoreless innings and Nick Capito closed it out with two hitless frames for his 17th save of the season.

Woodward, Gusrang and Vargas had two hits each.

Traverse City’s Mike Devine (6-2, 4.18) takes the hill in tonight’s contest, facing Joliet’s Chase Doremus (4-4, 2.63).
