TRAVERSE CITY —
The Traverse City Beach Bums wrap up the regular season today — and they're doing so in grand fashion with the Frontier League playoffs just a few days away.
The Beach Bums scored early and often Saturday night in beating the Road Warriors 8-1 at Wuerfel Park.
Traverse City, which already clinched the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, have won 11 of its last 13.
Jacob Clem pitched three-hit ball over six innings to earn his seventh win.
The Beach Bums scored in four of the first five innings.
Four walks, the last to Brian Heere, brought in the first run in the second, that actually tied the game at 1-1. Jose Vargas followed with a go-ahead two-run single that raised his season RBI total to 100.
In the third, catcher Marcus Nidiffer singled in Sean Gusrang, who had doubled.
Traverse City put another three spot on the board in the fourth — all with two outs,. Chase Burch singled and then came in on Jeff Flagg's double. Flagg moved to third on a pass ball and scored on a wild pitch. Kyle Colligan followed with a double and came in on Gusrang's single.
Burch delivered an RBI single in the fifth.
Mike Devine pitched three innings of shutout relief.
The Beach Bums finished with 11 hits, three by Vargas and two apiece by Burch, Colligan and Gusrang.
The teams wrap up the series this evening. After the regular season concludes today, the Frontier League playoffs open on Wednesday after off days on Monday and Tuesday.
