NORMAL, Ill. —
Traverse City players treated Wednesday night as their own personal home run derby.
Three Beach Bums representatives hit homers as the East Division won 9-6 over the West in the Frontier League All-Star game at Normal, Ill.
Jose Vargas hit a two-out solo shot in the first inning, Jeff Flagg belted a two-run homer in the third frame and Brian Heere — who hit only three long balls in the first half of the season — blasted a leadoff shot in the fourth.
Chase Burch added an RBI double in the fifth as five of Traverse City's six position players had hits. Catcher Marcus Nidiffer was 0 for 1.
Heere finished 2 for 3 and Ryan Still 1 for 2.
London's Joash Brodin was honored with the game's Most Valuable Player Award, going 4 for 5 with a solo homer and three runs in front of a crowd of 5,251 at the Corn Crib.
On the pitching side, the Beach Bums' Nick Capito threw one-third of an inning with no runs surrendered, Reid Kelly tossed a perfect seventh inning and struck out two and Jacob Clem gave up two runs in the eighth with four hits and one strikeout. Scott Mueller did not pitch.
Lake Erie's Paul Fagan picked up the win for the East, while Gateway's Tim Brown took the loss.
Traverse City (32-16) opens up the second half of the season Friday at last-place Washington (18-29) for a three-game set. The Beach Bums then come home for a three-game series against third-place Florence (27-21).
