Bums split twinbill

Vargas belts two homers, drives in six runs in opener

TRAVERSE CITY — Jose Vargas belted two home runs and two doubles Sunday as the Traverse City Beach Bums routed the Road Warriors 15-2 in the opener of a Frontier League doubleheader at Wuerfel Park.

The Road Warriors came back to win the nightcap, 10-7.

Vargas and Kyle Colligan led a 16-hit attack in game one with four hits apiece. Traverse City scored in every inning. The two home runs by Vargas pushed his total to 23 — and then he hit another in the second game. He now has 72 RBIs. He leads the league in both categories.

He had a bases-clearing double in the second, a two-run homer in the fifth and a solo shot in the sixth. He was also hit by a pitch in the contest.

Brooks Belter (8-1) was the recipient of all the run support. He pitched a seven-inning complete game, surrendering just one hit, a single in the fifth by Dave Roney. Belter walked six and hit two batters.

Sean Gusrang smacked his 11th home run in the blowout win. Gusrang. Colligan and Chase Burch all drove in two runs. Burch collected three hits.

In the nightcap, the Road Warriors — players comprised mostly from the former London team — scored seven runs in the first four innings and the Beach Bums could not recover. Traverse City did cut it to 7-6 after five, but the Road Warriors put a three spot on the board in the top of the sixth.

David Deminsky, the first of five pitchers, was tagged with the loss.

Traverse City pounded out 12 hits, two apiece by Jeff Flagg, Colligan, Gusrang and Kyle Eveland. Eveland drove in two runs.

The Road Warriors managed eight hits, but picked up 12 walks.

The two teams meet again tonight.
