TRAVERSE CITY — Chase Burch belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the third Saturday night as the Traverse City Beach Bums rallied for a 5-4 Frontier League win over Gateway.
The Grizzlies, fighting for first place in the West Division, threatened in the ninth, putting runners on first and third with one out. But reliever Nick Capito got Landon Hernandez to hit into a double play to end the game.
Gateway jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first, thanks in part to three walks and three Traverse City errors. Gateway had two hits in the frame, an RBI double by Vladimir Frias and an RBI single by Jose Flores.
Traverse City, the leaders in the East Division at 44-29, responded with a run in the second and four in the third. Sean Gusrang knocked in the run in the second on a ground out. Jose Vargas delivered an RBI single just before Burch went deep for his 12th home run of the season in the third. Burch now has 55 RBIs, second in the league.
Ben Rawding went three innings in his first start for the Beach Bums. Jacob Clem, Matt Miller and Capito combined for six shutout innings. Capito earned the save.
The Grizzlies outhit the Beach Bums 8-7. Burch had two hits for Traverse City.
Traverse City is now 4-0 on its nine-game homestand that continues with the Grizzlies tonight. Mike Devine will get the call for the Beach Bums, Aaron Baker for Gateway.
